The power of accessories

I was wearing a simple top and leggings combo last week, but I ‘made it my own’ (blame X-Factor being back on telly for that classic Louis Walsh soundbite) with the help of accessories. The tunic-top-with-leggings-and-pumps outfit is an easy and very wearable mummy look, but there’s no need to get stuck in a style rut, as it’s easy to make it more inspiring with the help of a few added extras.

Ah, the power of the accessory. They have so many functions:

  • They define your shape
  • They add interest
  • They put your personal stamp/identity on an outfit
  • They change your age
  • They create a whole new look

For example, throw a belt on over your loose top and ta-da! Hello waist! Wearing head-to-toe black? Brighten up with a neon necklace or a print cuff. Basic Tshirt and jeans? Sling on a leather jacket, Wayfarer sunnies and some studded boots and you’re a rock chick. Fancy shaving off a few years? Keep your accessories modern, fresh and on trend and you’ll appear younger. Mates always seeing you in chino trousers and a long-sleeved top? Stack on an armful of friendship bracelets, twist up a leopard print scarf and give them something to wow about with a pair of red patent loafers.

Here are a few ideas for mixing up a simple mummy look with accessories. Go on, ladies, experiment!
